WFD offers agility testing for potential firefighters

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Do you want to be a Wilmington firefighter? Friday night some folks got to see what it takes to wear the uniform.

The fire department is offering an opportunity to attend a practice strength and agility course at the Cape Fear Community College North Campus Training Tower.

One session was held Friday evening and more than 25 potential candidates attended.  Another session will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.

“They can come out here, we will walk them through each drill, show them what’s going on, we show them how to do the drill that way they can better grasp the ability to do it,” says WFD Training Division Captain Christian Stenerson. “The way the test is designed is that someone walking up with no experience can pass the test.”

Officials say those interested should come dressed in athletic gear with long pants and closed-toed shoes.

The course consists of eight tasks: room search, hose coupling, ladder climb, victim drag, ladder raise, stair/pack climb, hose drag and equipment carry.

Attendance is not mandatory to apply for the job.
